What To Tell Yourself If You Are Afraid Something Won’t Work Out

It’s no secret that the fear of failing can be paralysing. It can deprive you of energy, ideas, prevent you from acting. This is why it’s so important to know how to support yourself when it happens. But how? Quite often, we do the opposite and hurt ourselves saying, “I am a loser”, “It always ends the same way”, “I shouldn’t even try”.

Let’s substitute them, shall we? Have a look at the alternatives.

1. “It’s worth giving it a try!”

Yes, you don’t know how it will end. The truth is, we never know it. However, how will you know if you never try? You can see it as an experiment.

2. “What’s the worst thing that could happen if it actually doesn’t work out?”

Sometimes our expectations rise too high, and we think that if we… (fail this presentation, cannot achieve the best ever result when solving this task, if we look silly), that will be IT, the END. This thought it paralysing, it contains all of our fears. However, what will actually happen that will be so bad? Phrase it well, make a few clear points. Don’t forget to check them with reality! Then you’ll see that most likely it won’t be the end of the world, which means that you can give it a try.

3. “Yes, I might fail. But I will handle that.”

These words leave you space for a maneuver. You accept the reality as an adult. Is there a chance you will fail? Yes, but it’s no tragedy, you won’t fall into pieces because of it, which is very important.

4. “No matter what, I am doing a great job because I’m actually trying!”

This is yet another formula of support that encourages you to praise yourself for the process (which is evidently difficult), rather than for the result. You are trying to do something, you are overcoming obstacles, isn’t it worth rewarding yourself for?

5. “If I do nothing, it’s a FACT that it won’t work out.”

Let’s say, your task is actually difficult, and you have a good reason to worry. But give this a thought: if you get scared and hide your head in the sand, it won’t work out for sure since you are not doing anything. By making an effort you are giving yourself a solid chance for success. It’s either you have a chance, or you have none. If you look at it, the conclusion is obvious.

6. “Do it, even if you’re scared.”

Yes, you are afraid that it won’t work out. To be honest, we are all scared. It’s okay to be scared. However, you can either be scared and hide, or you can be scared and do something. Choosing the second option is for those who actually achieve success in the end.

7. “If I give up, I will regret it.”

This is what usually happens. Giving in to your moments of fear and giving up before the fight begins, you open your doors to disappointment. Giving up under the pressure of circumstance is one thing, while giving up due to anxiety and worries is another.

8. “I am stronger than I think.”

These are powerful words of support and we are actually stronger than we usually think. Give yourself a free hand, don’t limit your own authority!

9. “I believe in myself!”

This is a top-class stunt. Believing in yourself even when it seems that the whole world doesn’t believe in you. Believing in yourself and your own power is the foundation of many things, and by using this mantra, you are creating a powerful inner resource.
