How to choose the right hobby

A hobby or something that you like to do is a reflection of the inner world of a person. Many people will be outraged: What if I don’t have a hobby? Do I have a poor inner world?? Of course not. Most often, this means that something important was suppressed in childhood because a hobby is not something related to ‘I have and should’. It’s something about ‘I want and like.’

Putting things in order in the room is important, while “sorting through candy wrappers is only a waste of time.” This is partly why many adults lose their desire to do something of their own. It can be “not useful”, but it’s terribly pleasant. At the same time, it’s very hard to find this ‘something’ in adulthood because you are not a kid anymore and you can’t listen to your own desires. It’s time to activate it!

What for? Because a hobby is a source of energy, which can be used to implement all other life tasks. A hobby is a prop in case of failures in other areas of life. It gives you a lot of benefits!

UNLOCKING MENTAL WELLBEING

You are not sure where to begin?

1. Back to basics

Remember what you liked to do as a child: Collect stamps? Create various models? Making dresses for dolls? Did you like to draw? Did you like making jewelry out of shells? Write down everything that comes to mind. It’s not necessary that you will be doing the same thing now, but this may suggest the right direction. Did you like making beads out of buttons? Perhaps now it will be interesting to make jewelry using polymer clay. Do you want to paint pictures? Maybe you need to choose art therapy?

2. Try new things.

You don’t have to follow a well-trodden path. If you always liked to do something with your hands (collect or glue), it’s great; however, sometimes we need to get rid of the old things.

Experiments are a part of our resource supply. When you try something new, you feel a surge of energy.

To find out if something fits you, you need to try it on yourself.

Make it a rule to try something new 3-4 times a month.

3. Keep a list

It helps to make a specific list of possible activities. Moreover, it’s better to do this in a while. Put a list somewhere in your house and add things once in a while.

It can consist of the most unexpected items from carving and scrapbooking to brewing moonshine.

Where can I get them? Watch people, ask them what they do, read various articles on the Internet.

How do I use the list? Read it again and again. Try all the activities to understand those, which you really like.

4. Use reversal of logic.

This is also an option. Imagine that you work exclusively with your head and the brain is generally your strongest side at the office.  In order to take some rest, you need to choose a different type of activity, thus puzzles are not the best options even if you like them.

Use underdeveloped fields of your imagination. For example, you can go dancing to use and ignite your body. You can start making origami. Your head is resting and your hands are working.

5. Copy their behavior

On various sites and forums, there are many people who are so passionate about different things. You can easily “get infected” only by reading about how someone masters the ancient Chinese art of bonsai and feel a burning desire to try it too! And then share your success (or failure) on the same website. You can admire calligraphy. After that you can immediately buy everything you need to master this art. Look around. What do people around you do? Maybe you’ll like it, too.

6. Catch the feelings

Feelings are an indicator that helps to find ‘your’ things. What do you feel when you do something?

If you want to go back to it again and again, you lose the sense of time while you draw/glue/cut/collect/train, there is a filling of resources in the internal reservoir of energy, there is a willingness to spend money and time on it… Congratulations, you have successfully found the hobby.
