Why is this so? Most likely it is due to the taboo on anger that many of us learned as children. Do you remember that in all children’s fairy tales, evil characters are angry? And parents could add fuel to the fire by criticizing anger. Or, conversely, if your relatives were hot-tempered, you might have a strong idea that ​​“being angry is very scary and unsafe”.

In general, for one reason or another, you may either suppress the anger in yourself or, conversely, show it excessively.

  • Suppressing anger is a dangerous tactic. This leads to diseases. Both mental and physical.
  • Expressing anger out of control is also bad. It destroys relationships and alienates people.

What to do then? Here are some safe and effective ways to relieve anger.

1) Name it

Say clearly to your interlocutor: “I feel angry right now.” Ideally, if you can, ask for a pause in communication. For example: “I am angry at you. Let’s get back to this topic in a few minutes“.

2) Spit it

If you can find a chance to be alone, go out for a couple of minutes and… spit as much as you want.

3) Puff like a locomotive

Take a deep breath and exhale with force while making a sound resembling releasing steam. You can even imagine that you are releasing puffs of anger. Repeat this cycle 10 times.

4) Physical activity

You can punch something soft (a pillow or a stuffed toy), jump up and down, punch a few times an imaginary boxing partner, throw something (without hurting yourself, others, or property). Brisk walking also helps to release tension.
